Don’t do life for the applause
Below is a very clever new ad on TV. Skoda is a relatively new brand outside of Europe. While it was founded in 1895 and is owned by Volkswagen, it wisely realizes that it cannot compete with the big glamour brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and to a lesser degree, Volkswagen.
What is so clever though is the man Skoda – or more likely their advertising agency – has used to front the ad. Dr. John O’Sullivan is the founder of Wi-Fi. Take a look at it and you’ll see what I mean.
As I watched this it really resonated with me. In fact I had wondered on more than one occasion how we got Wi-Fi, or who invented it. I guess I could have Googled it if I was that interested.
The reality is that of all the amazingly brilliant people on this earth, it’s a very small portion who are famous. Wi-Fi is game-changing technology. I use it every day. It has rocked my world, yet if Skoda did not feature Dr. John O’Sullivan in their ad, he would be a completely anonymous world-changer and history maker.
Think of the surgeons, the business people, the nurses, teachers. There are just so many amazing people who get in the traffic every morning who are world changers, but we’ll never hear about them. Even the everyday moms and dads who sacrifice so much to raise their children are my heroes. They are never going to get a medal for the thankless work that they do.
You don’t need to be famous nor recognized to be brilliant. In fact I encourage you to be brilliant at what you do, whether the world ever finds out about it or not.
Colossians 3;23 tells us that “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” At the end of the day, that is all that matters.
