Want to know how you can excel in life?
Don’t you love watching people do things that make the hard look easy? I love the way Roger Federer covers a tennis court effortlessly. It’s as though he only has to cover a three square meter area. I play tennis like I have to cover half a football field. I never seem to stop running.
I love watching newly crowned world surfing champion John John Florence devour a wave. It’s like he has authority over the ocean and he forewarns the wave what he is about to do to it. Most people get slaughtered in the ocean. John John controls it as though he has some form of divine power over it.
When I talk to different people I am sometimes surprised by how they haven’t figured out what they want to do in life. Christians are generally the worst. Because of our higher power, it is as though many have no vision for their lives, instead waiting for some sort of bolt of lightning from above to strike them. Many are worried to step out, as though taking initiative for their lives may somehow not be surrendering to the will of God.
Yet I find it surprising because God already gives us indications of where we should be heading, and that is via our talents. Quite simply, you start with what you’re already good at, quickly eliminating what you’re not. In my case I have a voice that could strip wallpaper. I dance with two left feet. You’ve already learned how bad I am at tennis.
Yet in my early twenties I learnt that when I sat down in front of a computer and started to do business, it not only came to me fairly easily, but it was so much fun. I didn’t say it wasn’t difficult though. Nobody who runs a company will tell you it is easy. But from a young age I found like I had hit a sweet spot.
As we enter a new year, which is the perfect time for us all to evaluate our lives for a fresh year ahead, I would ask you two questions:
1. What do you love?
2. What are you good at?
As long as you didn’t answer ‘drinking beer and watching football’; or ‘shopping all day long and relaxing at the spa’ to both questions then the answers in my opinion are a great insight to perhaps what you should be doing with your life.
Making the hard look (relatively) easy is achievable – if you are prepared to use the God-given skills you were put on this earth for.
