Donald Trump has addressed America over his stand-off with Congress that has shut down the government for more than 19 days.

In order to protect the nation’s borders, Trump shut the government before Christmas

US President Donald Trump has made his first TV address to the nation from the Oval Office, escalating a that has led to an 19-day partial government shutdown.

Mr Trump insisted on funding for his long-promised border wall with Mexico.

Democratic lawmakers have been invited to the White House Wednesday to try and make a deal, fund the wall and reopen the government.

Trump spoke to the American public in a nine-minute prime-time address delivered from the White House. To the disappointment of many, he did not declare an emergency that would enable him to bypass the lower house of Congress now controlled by the opposition Democrats.

Democratic leaders have accused him of holding the American people hostage.

In his statement, Mr Trump correctly pointed out that Democrats including Mr Schumer had voted for a physical barrier to cover 700 miles. He also cited cases of American citizens “savagely murdered in cold blood” by undocumented immigrants.

Trump is due to visit the border this Thursday.
