Francis Chan: church should not be a “wave pool” experience
Popular pastor Francis Chan has spoken out on the current state of church, telling pastors to set aside personal agendas and follow Jesus.
Speaking at the Exponential Conference Tuesday at First Baptist in Orlando, Florida, the Christian Post reports that Chan told the audience that we are making churches like a ‘wave pool’ experience.
Chan warned them against the dangers of making church like a “wave pool” at a water park, where the experience might be fun, but it is “so different from real surfing.”
“I can create a wave,” he told the conference’s attendees. I can make a wave start at 9:20. And I can have a peak at 9:30. And then it will die out at 9:50 so we can get the kids out of childcare. I can make a wave where everyone is having a blast and then we walk away and we go, ‘whoa God moved!’ Eh, I think it was man-made this week.
“As long as we’re OK in the wave pool and create a little bit of excitement, we’re not going to get to see the things we see in the Bible.”
The theme for this year’s conference was “mobilizing God’s people God’s way, with the focus on how each of us are called for more in our lives, churches, and networks.
Last year, the pastor released Letters to the Church, in which he asked, “Is God pleased with our churches? God’s Church started as a radical, spiritually intimate gathering of believers that ultimately changed history. Yet millions today are content to be mere observers at church. Many more have left, brokenhearted and cynical. But God is waking up His people—people who will risk anything and sacrifice everything to be the dynamic, world-changing Church of Scripture.”
Chan is the best-selling author of Letters to the Church, Crazy Love, Forgotten God, and You and Me Forever. Currently, Francis is planting churches in the San Francisco area, where he resides with his wife and their seven children.
