If you’re the leader, cast the vision…
I have been reading Richard Branson’s biography Finding My Virginity and one of the parts I found really interesting was his discussion around a leadership issue he was facing. Using Martin Luther King’s famous quote, ‘I have a dream…’ he stated no great leader starts a conversation to their team saying ‘I have a nightmare.’
It’s true. If you’re a leader, you’re a visionary. Period. The leader of any organization, or even division, is to set a clear agenda for where the group is heading, and then get out of their way so they can help you achieve that vision.
A lot is written about leadership, and while it can be a difficult position, the number one thing you need to do is cast a vision. I am always surprised by how many leaders don’t do this and accordingly, the people on their team don’t quite know where they are heading. Not only that, but works becomes like ‘ground hog day’ for them. They ensure the people they are leading do their jobs and know what is required of them, but there is nothing to excite them or inspire them.
The best leaders are therefore visionaries. They have the ability to rally people around them and their cause and they inspire them to reach new heights. That leader does not have to be the ultimate leader of the organization, either. They could be the head of children’s church, the head of R&D, or the head of customer service.
One thing is certain through, and that is that if you are a leader who can inspire others, you won’t be the head of a division for long. Greater opportunities will await the leader that can inspire, motivate and drive their team on to bigger and better things.
It’s actually pretty simple, but that is what people are looking for in their leaders.
