Israel Folau, Australia’s answer to Tim Tebow
Sport in most countries is a big deal. Like America, football in Australia is religion to many. While there are multiple codes, the passion for each code runs strong. As such sports starts have a platform unlike most others.
Israel Folau is a special athlete. He was playing first grade in the rough and tumble sport of rugby league at the age of 17. Not long after he was representing his country. From there he was signed by rival code the Australian Football League, before moving to a third code, rugby union, where he now resides. However, there is talk that rugby league clubs are circling and want him back in their game.
At just 29, Folau bucks the current trend and uses Twitter to share his faith – no matter what people think. He was recently summoned to a meeting with Rugby Australia, his employers, after using Twitter to advise that he believed that gay people would go to hell.
He didn’t just take to Twitter, however, to make these comments. He was asked if gay people go to hell, when he replied that sinners go to hell. His comments have been national news, however his latest Twitter share, where he posts an 11-minute video from David Wilkerson, who died in 2011.
He says, “With great love i wanted to share this video in the hope that people watch it and think about it. Jesus is coming back soon and he wants us to turn to him through repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38) please don’t harden your heart.”
Folau has once again copped plenty of criticism for his post. However, like Tim Tebow, he is neither ashamed of the Gospel, or scared of the media. The media intensity in Australia is such that most high profile Christians are too scared to stand up for what they believe in because of the ferociousness of the media. But not Folau.
The world needs more Christians like Folau and Tebow; people who will stand up for their faith and not try and appease the people.
