Pro-lifers have rallied in Belfast to call on Northern Ireland to stand up for the unborn.Thousands reportedly attended the march, held in the grounds of Stormont.

Currently, abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland except to protect the life of the mother.

MLA Jim Wells spoke to the crowd and stressed that the people of Northern Ireland were determined to oppose abortion.

He highlighted a 2017 report by campaign group Both Lives Matter that showed an estimated 100,000 people are alive today because of Northern Ireland’s stance.

Participants at the march held up signs saying “the North protects” – a response to “the North is next’ slogan used by pro-abortion activists after the recent Republic of Ireland referendum.

Ireland voted in May to repeal the pro-life Eighth Amendment and the Irish Government is now expected to rush through legislation to allow for abortion on demand during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The campaign for abortion on demand won the referendum by 66.4 per cent of the vote to 33.6 per cent.

When the result was announced, pro-life campaign group Save the 8th described it as “a tragedy of historic proportions”.
