Why you need to strive for excellence
Just recently I took my eight year-old son down for an early surf. I normally paddle out with him, but I had our six month-old daughter asleep in the pouch so I could give my wife a sleep in.
As my son started paddling out I noticed a surf photographer on the beach. There were a couple of boys out there who were handy surfers, but it seemed to me like my son was the one getting the best rides. Yet the photographer hadn’t put his lens on him and taken any shots. My son snuck a couple of great waves in, and after one wave the photographer saw me encouraging my son to bend his knees out of his turns.
“Is that your son?” he asked me, to which I replied in the positive. “Wow, he is a really good surfer,” he went on to say. I introduced myself, and before long he told me how he didn’t shoot surfers he didn’t know, but would be happy to take shots of my son.
What followed was a 90 minute surf session, where he basically had his own personal photographer. We followed each other on Instagram that morning and later in the day he posted about 20 shots to our wall. One of the shots is above.
So what’s my point? So often in life we toil away at what we are doing, yet it seems like nobody is noticing. We work hard, we strive and strive, and yet it can feel like nobody notices.
My son has spent countless hours in the water with no one taking any notice. He has been quietly plying his trade, and when a great photographer was present, his hard work was noticed.
Likewise in your life, if you’re good at what you do, your work will be noticed. It may take time, but people will catch on. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see a man diligent and skillful in his business? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.”
Getting to this place in your life will take time, but trust me, you will be noticed in due course. We’re already half way through the year, but the time is now to make 2018 the year your talents stand out for God.
